The 2019 Compute Ontario Summer School on Scientific and High Performance Computing (East)

The Compute Ontario Summer School on High Performance and Technical Computing is an annual educational event for students, post-docs and researchers in the areas of computational science. Jointly organized by SHARCNET (Ontario-West), SciNet(Ontario-Central) and the Centre for Advanced Computing (Ontario-East), attendees are provided with opportunities to learn and share knowledge and experience in high performance and technical computing. This all-week series of workshops will cover a range of high-performance computing related subjects. The Summer School will be conducted in three instalments for the different regions of Ontario:

  • McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, June 10-14, 2019 (SHARCNET)
  • University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, June 24-28, 2019 (SciNET)
  • University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, July 8-12, 2019 (CAC)

Workshop Reading Week 2019 : How To Use a Cluster

Computing has become and indispensable tool for virtually every field of research, ranging from the obvious such as high-energy physics to the far-from such as art preservation. The capacity required for research computing is often beyond what can covered by local resources in the research lab. Instead, shared resources are required, ranging from University-based ones such as the Queen's Centre for Advanced Computing (CAC), to national ones such as "Niagara" at the University of Toronto. There is a great deal of collaboration between these Compute Centres, and many of the resources are free. In this two-day workshop we aim to cover some of the aspects of using such compute resources. We will provide access to a scheduled compute cluster and explain the usage from the ground up. The approach is "hands-on". There will be (almost) no slides, so bring your laptop. The subjects are:

  • How to get access to Compute Resources in Canada
  • Accessing and using a Linux system (Intro to bash)
  • Submitting jobs on a cluster (Intro to High Performance Computing)
  • Basic programming (Intro to Python Programming)
  • Simple MPI programming (Intro to parallel programming using Python/MPI)

This workshop is meant as a "crash course" to Cluster usage. The participants will be supplied with temporary accounts on a compute cluster.

RAC 2019 @ Queen's : Info Session

The annual Compute Canada "Resource Allocation Competition" (RAC) starts on September 27. With sparse computational resources across Canada, researchers @ Queen's University may want to consider applying for the allocation of such resources through an application to Compute Canada. This info session is directed at novices to such an application, as well as those who would like to be informed about changes in the procedure.

The Centre for Advanced Computing is committed to help Queen's researchers to gain the access to large-scale computational resources they need to be successful. Join us during lunchtime to get an overview of the process, and to get some questions answered.
