Portable Storage

We provide portable data storage solutions for users that have large data but limited bandwidth.

Data-intensive computing is a growing problem in high-performance computing particularly when the data has to be transferred to or from an external source. While the Centre for Advanced Computing has a high-speed connection to ORION and CANARIE, Ontario and Canada's research networks, not all researchers have access to this resource. Typically, the "last mile" of the network - connections between researchers' department and their labs is the weakest portion of the network.

The Centre has purchased several portable disk and tape systems. These units were designed for safe shipping of data and can connect to a research laboratory via USB, FireWire, eSATA or SCSI. Whether your research requires a few TBytes of disk or a twenty tape autoloader:

  • 2 TB RAID array (USB3/eSATA/Firewire)
  • 6 TB RAID array (USB3/eSATA/Firewire)
  • Standalone LTO4 Tape Drive (SAS)
  • SL24 LTO4 Tape Loader (SCSI)
